What is a database?

A database (or data base or database) is an organized collection of information in a digital medium.

An example of a database is the athenaeum electronic catalog (OPAC) which gives you quick access to thousands of pieces of information organized into bibliographic records, allowing you through a search interface to locate which library has the document you are looking for, if it is owned.

When we speak of databases, however, we generally refer to more specialized bibliographic research tools made to provide detailed information on what has been published within particular subject areas, historical periods, authors, subjects, types of material, regardless of the location of the documents surveyed.

The databases consist of a huge amount of specially selected and continuously updated records.

They can be multidisciplinary or specialized, use only one type of material as a source (e.g., periodical articles only) or multiple types (books, periodical articles, conference proceedings, reviews, dissertations), be limited to a geographic area or survey materials published worldwide; they can also contain the full-text of indexed documents, or consist only/mainly of bibliographic references and abstracts.
